about

The art of free improvisation is essential to the work of Michael Moore, bassist Barre Phillips and drummer Gerry Hemingway. These three brilliant musicians also share the fact that Europe became their home after leaving the United States and provided the environment that helped them develop their art over most of their lifetimes. Their new recording, Slips, is the first recorded session of the trio.

Moore initially met Phillips a decade ago. Another four years passed before they were able to play together. The bassist has become one of the longest tenured and productive improvising musicians over the past decade, having explored the vast musical terrains between Eric Dolphy and Ornette Coleman to Evan Parker and Joe Maneri. Though Moore hesitates to call his heroes to perform, Phillips’s laidback California mentality fit well with Moore’s similar temperament, and they worked together wonderfully.

Hemingway’s relationship with Moore goes back much further. The endlessly creative drummer was featured on Ramboy’s second release, Home Game, recorded in 1988. Hemingway and Moore’s regular meetings have ensured a fantastic rapport and common language between the two.
The trio convened at Splendor in Amsterdam on March 9, 2019, to record. The artist collective’s studio and theater provided an intimate and fantastic sounding space for the trio to explore. The recording produced four long tracks that Moore titled in homage to his friend and musical hero, Steve Lacy.

The music presented is at times playful, sometimes contentious, but always thoughtful. The gathering of these musical minds provides a fantastic example of the legacy of musicians like Lacy, Phillips, Moore and Hemingway as they find new ways to express themselves with likeminded aural explorers.

Together, these three releases show the broad palette that is the oeuvre of Michael Moore. As the leader himself said about the variety, depth and breadth of his career: “Musical lives are endless.”
