about

In 2018, Moore was approached by Argentinean percussionist Marcio Doctor, whom Moore had met nearly twenty years earlier and a member of the NDR Bigband in Hamburg, Germany. Doctor’s appreciation of Moore’s chamber works featuring bassist Mark Helias and pianist Fred Hersch led to his interest in having Moore present his music with the Bigband. The invitation would include a week of rehearsals, recording and performance with the group. Moore jumped at this rare opportunity to have his work played by a large ensemble of this caliber.

The project would provide an excellent opportunity to revisit a number of pieces from the Ramboy catalog. Moore would provide ten pieces spanning his last forty years of work for the project. Moore arranged six pieces for the Bigband, while Christian Elsässer arranged “Brunheiras,” Frank Carlberg arranged “Providence,” and Henk Meutgeert arranged “Anomalous Soul” and “Shotgun Wedding.” Reflecting Jaki Byard’s early influence, Moore has always used his compositions as open-ended springboards for improvisation, letting the music develop and allowing the action to decide the outcome. Moore and the NDR Bigband enjoyed the challenges of both stretching out and finding new paths to organize these pieces.

Moore’s eclecticism is rampant throughout Sanctuary. Written for a small town near Moore’s family getaway house in Portugal, “Brunheiras” is a piece inspired by composer Hermeto Pascoal’s use of flowing melodies over complex chord changes and has been performed in numerous musical formats. Elsässer’s arrangement heightens the harmonic and thematic drama as it evolves through forceful solos by Moore and guitarist Sandra Hempel. Moore calls his wistful “Trouble House” his Bob Dylan tune, Dylan being a hero and a source of inspiration for one of Moore’s long-running ensembles, Jewels & Binoculars. The gorgeous piece allows Moore’s alto to truly sing over acoustic guitar and jaunty rhythms. “Sanctuary” was written for Moore’s mother, an inspiring woman and school teacher, her positivity and empathy made her presence a sanctuary of sorts. The piece jumps with rhythmic intensity, powered by drummer Tom Rainey’s driving pulse. Its bright melody is only deepened by the NDR Bigband’s vast coloristic additions.

Moore’s Sanctuary takes a once-in-a- lifetime opportunity for the leader to perform his music with the incredible NDR Bigband and revisit his catalog as a wonderful retrospective.
