about

Michael Moore - clarinets
Fred Hersch - piano
Mark Helias - bass

The second recording of the Moore, Hersch, Helias trio playing some standards, Brazilian, and original songs. Recorded in the Bremen radio hall made famous by Keith Jarrett’s solo recording.

"If there would be a title above this review it would be The Unbearable Lightness of Being. The second CD of clarinetist Michael Moore's trio with pianist Fred Hersch and bassist Mark Helias is of an unbearable lightness. The trio proves that this can also include emotional depth. Right from the start, the first number, Mundo Sem Fim from the 'Portuguese/Dutchman' Fernando Lameirinhas is pure 'goosebumps and tears' music. Moore plays the melody so movingly that it is difficult to not be disappointed by what comes after. But the atmosphere stays throughout the set of the leader's own beautiful compositions, jazz pieces from Jimmy Rowles, Wayne Shorter, and John Lewis, Broadway songs and beautiful Brazilian songs. On the trio's previous recording (Chicoutimi) Moore uses the trio of clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre (with pianist Paul Bley and bassist Steve Swallow) as a point of reference. Likewise here, but this is more than their own take on that idiom. This is music which rises far above boxes such as jazz, classical or world music. Bering is of such beauty that, as listener, you don't have a heart if you can't enjoy it."
